Canon EF 70-300 f/4-56 IS USM Lens
I have been using the Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM lens for more than two years now and it has become an important component of my travel kit. The lens is relatively light weight and therefore easy to carry and to use, even when spending an entire day on foot in a city like Paris.
The zoom range of this lens adds to its usability and versatility and users of this lens will find that there is less need to change between lenses once this one is on your camera.

The Image Stabilization is the definitely the one feature that separates this lens from the rest of the crowd. This feature alone has provided me with photographs that would otherwise not have been sharp or possible at all. In many situations tripods or monopods are just not practical and this is where the Image Stabilization shows its true value. Wildlife and birds often present great photo opportunities at the least favorable of photography conditions - in low light, when no tripod is available or when you’re on a moving Game Drive vehicle.

Even while travelling, I have been able to make otherwise impossible photographs of details in the low light conditions of cathedrals and museums. The 3-stop advantage that Image stabilization brings is, once you’ve used it, something that you will never be able to do without, as far as long zoom lenses are concerned.
Even though this lens does not have the build quality of the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM professional lens, after two years of use, this lens is still as sharp and solid as it was on day one. The photographs I have made with this lens are sharp, of high quality and definitely meet the standards of serious amateur photographers.
In summary, the Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM lens provides a highly attractive price/performance package for the serious amateur and, even with L-series lenses as part of their kit, one may that find some professional photographers keep this lens as part of their kit, simply because of its size, weight and versatility. A definite recommendation for serious amateurs or 1st time Telephoto zoom lens buyers who will appreciate the opportunities provided by Image stabilization.
