The Canon EF 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6L IS USM lens is relatively heavy at 3.7 pounds but it’s worth every gram of weight. As expected from an L series lens, the included hood, the lens case and the lens itself, is of good quality. Some photographers do however feel that the shoulder strap is too narrow and will pinch a nerve if you carry the lens case around your neck or shoulder for too long.

The greatest value of this lens is that it offers a single lens solution for all round shooting or for circumstances in which one doesn’t really know what focal lengths will be required. The solidly built EF 28-300mm IS lens performs great despite it’s wide focal range and is versatile enough for shooting high quality landscapes, close-ups and action shots.

The versatile Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM lens provides outstanding color and contrast and, living up to L series expectations, superb picture quality, great color saturation and gorgeous bokeh. Some photographers have noted softness in pictures at the 28 and 300mm range with fully opened aperture, but the reports are few and far between.

The out of the ordinary push-pull zoom function takes a little time to get used to, but allows lightning fast zoom change, making the Canon EF 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6 L IS USM lens perfect for fast changing circumstances. For a new user, the 200mm and 300mm focal lengths may feel too close to each other, which can make it difficult to adjust to the precise zoom and may cause overshoot. At the long end (300mm), the lens gets stuck at times and you have to use force to push it back. This prevents you from gradually and smoothly changing the zoom in between 180-300mm. This, however, is only the case when the lens is new, and does get better with frequent use.

The Canon EF 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6L IS USM lens is quiet and fast focusing, with the focusing distance only 0.7 meter for any zoom range. The image stabilizer does a great job and is very quiet.

There seems to be a learning curve with this lens and it is quite expensive, but its versatility and quality makes it well worth the time and money.
