And when considering the extras (case, tripod ring, hood) the price is really not that much higher than the lower order cameras available on the market. The 70-200mm f/2.8L is an excellent and versatile lens, terrific at almost any range. It is lightning fast and superb at low-light, producing crystal clear shots with second to none contrast.
The weight is a serious downside, but when looking at your results, you should be able to live with it. A Tripod is always an option and the tripod ring makes it very easy to rotate the lens from landscape to portrait without off-balancing the weight. For those among you experiencing an internal struggle between purchasing the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM and the same version camera with Image Stabilizer, consider the following:

A wildlife, bird or sports photographer, with a really unsteady hand, or a photographer planning to use extension tubes, might find that the IS version is worth the extra money. But an event, wedding or studio photographer, whose subjects are not moving around, can save money and battery power by simply using a tripod. You can also reduce the need for IS by upping the ISO and shutter speed. With the 70-200mm f/2.8L, there will be enough light to enable you to do this while shooting at 1/200th of a second. Don’t even bother considering another lens in this range. While the IS version is nice, but some reports have indicated that it is slower, and not as sharp as the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM.
